Cláudia Umbelino é uma antropóloga biológica que se dedica ao estudo das populações humanas do passado através da análise dos seus restos ósseos numa perspetiva biocultural, trabalhando ocasionalmente em contextos forenses. É Professora Auxiliar no Departamento de Ciências da Vida da Universidade de Coimbra e leciona diferentes unidades curriculares na Licenciatura em Antropologia, no Mestrado em Evolução e Biologia Humanas e no Mestrado em Antropologia Forense. Tem realizado diversas análises paleobiológicas de diferentes séries osteológicas humanas com cronologias que vão desde o Mesolítico final até à época moderna. Interessa-se sobretudo pela reconstrução da dieta, análise patológica e avaliação dos padrões de mobilidade das comunidades humanas do passado através da análise de isótopos estáveis de C, N, e Sr, particularmente dos períodos Mesolítico e Neolítico. Para além do trabalho laboratorial, desenvolve também trabalho de campo, sendo atualmente a antropóloga biológica responsável nas escavações arqueológicas do Cabeço da Amoreira, Concheiro de Muge (Mesolítico final), em Portugal, e da Gruta de la Dehesilla (Neolítico antigo), na província de Cádiz, Espanha.
