Gonçalo D. Santos é professor auxiliar de Antropologia social-cultural no Departamento de Ciências da Vida da Universidade de Coimbra. É ainda Investigador Integrado no CIAS—Centro de Investigação em Antropologia a Saúde onde coordena o grupo de pesquisa sobre “Tecnociência, Sociedade, e Ambiente.” Foi professor e investigador de antropologia na London School of Economics and Political Science no Reino Unido, no Instituto Max Planck de Antropologia Social na Alemanha, e na Universidade de Hong Kong. É o autor do livro Chinese Village Life Today (University of Washington Press, 2021); e é o coorganizador do livro Transforming Patriarchy. Chinese Families in the 21st Century (publicado pela mesma editora universitária em 2017). O seu trabalho tem sido publicado em revistas importantes nas áreas da antropologia, estudos asiáticos, e estudos sociais de ciência e tecnologia, incluindo Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Current Anthropology, HAU, Modern Asian Studies, Technology and Culture, and Zhongguo Xueshu. A sua pesquisa explora novas abordagens críticas a questões de modernidade, desenvolvimento, e transformação social, moral, e tecnológica na China contemporânea. É o fundador da Rede de Pesquisa Internacional Sci-Tech Asia, e é um membro convidado do Research Group on Culture and Society da Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues da Universidade de Georgetown nos Estados Unidos da América. Uma parte da sua pesquisa recente é influenciada por teorizações pós-humanistas dentro da antropologia e das ciências humanas, encorajando o desenvolvimento de novas formas de pensar os desafios civilizacionais do Antropoceno e da atual crise ambiental. Em 2021-2022, lançou o colóquio internacional: “Pluralizando o Antropoceno. Reimaginando o Futuro do Planeta no Século XXI,” já na segunda temporada.
