Osteoporosis and Fragility Fractures in the Portuguese Identified Skeletal Collections (Duration: 2006‐2010)

Duration: 2006 ‐ 2010

Abstract: The diachronic modification of etiological factors, like longevity, physical activity or diet, affected the prevalence of osteoporosis and the so-called osteoporotic fractures. The key objective of this investigation established itself in the belief that it is possible to detect and characterize the differences and similarities (the epidemiological patterns) of osteoporosis and the fragility fractures during almost two centuries (the 19th and the 20th centuries) in identified skeletal collections, by means of a transdisciplinar analysis that includes, among other sciences, Anthropology, Medicine, History and Paleopathology.
