Ramón López-Gijón holds a PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Granada. With a multidisciplinary background (degree in Archaeology and Master in Physical and Forensic Anthropology), his line of research is based on the finding of parasites in archaeological contexts. To this end, he has carried out pre-doctoral stays in leading laboratories in this field, such as the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge (UK), the Chrono-environment laboratory of the CNRS-Université de Franche-Comté (France), the Oswaldo Cruz Biomedicine Institute of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and the Institut für Ur- un Frügeschichte un Archäeologie des Mittelalters of the University of Tübingen (Germany).

His scientific contributions range from the Neolithic to the Modern Age, providing evidence of hygienic-sanitary conditions, agricultural and livestock practices, as well as the presence and/or consumption of domestic and peridomestic animals, through the discovery of parasitic evidence.

These contributions have been supported by anthropological studies, allowing the observation of variations in the prevalence of parasites according to sex and age.

He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Évora (Portugal) as part of the project “InOSteo – Abordagem Interdisciplinar à Coleção Osteológica do Hospital Militar do Castelo de São Jorge (séculos XII-XIII), Lisboa”.
