Biologist and Medical Doctor (Universidade Federal do Pará – UFPA, Brazil, 1990, 1991), Master in Anthropology (Penn State, USA, 1993), Master in Public Health, and PhD in Anthropology/Biological Anthropology (The Ohio State University, USA, 1998, 2001). Currently is Associate Professor in the Graduate Programs in Anthropology (PPGA) and in Collective Health (PPGSCA) of UFPA, and in the Center for Advanced Multidisciplinary Studies of the University of Brasília (CEAM/UnB), Brazil; Coordinator of the Laboratory of Bioanthropological Studies in Health and the Environment (LEBIOS/CNPq); Board Member of the Human Biology Association (HBA), USA, and Associate Researcher of the Research Centre for Anthropology and Health (CIAS). Has coordinated long term projects about health, growth, nutrition and the emergency of chronic diseases in rural and African derived (Quilombola) populations of the Amazon, the Northeast, and the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, and done volunteer, research and consulting work in the areas of public health, public policies, education, bioarchaeology, and the socio-environmental determinants of diseases in Brazil, Cape Verde, Cuba, Ecuador, Guinea Bissau, Republic of Georgia, and the USA. Is author and co-author of over 100 publications in peer reviewed journals and books, and a strong promoter of science dissemination in Brazil and abroad.
