6th Portuguese Meeting of Paleopathology (English Version)

The Research Centre for Anthropology and Health – CIAS – in partnership with the Group of Studies in Human Evolution – GEEvH – and the Department of Life Sciences/Anthropology of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, invite all interested parties to participate at the 6th Portuguese Meeting of Paleopathology , to be held on 30th November and 1st December, 2018.

Objectives and Target Audience

This interdisciplinary event aims to contribute to the knowledge of the latest advances in paleopathological research, especially in Portugal, shedding light on the history of Paleopathology and reinforcing its unquestionable role in the reconstruction of past populations.

The 6thPMP will have as main audience students and professionals of the areas of Anthropology, Biology, Archeology/History, Medicine and other Health Sciences. However, those interested with training in other areas of knowledge will be very welcome.

Portuguese | Spanish and English (exceptionally accepted)

The event will take place in the Department of Life Sciences (the building corresponding to the former Department of Anthropology) of the University of Coimbra (see map).

Work submissions

The final scientific program of the 6thPMP will be published in due course.

Oral and poster communications

The correspondents must send, by e-mail (jornadaspaleopatologia@gmail.com), until September 30, 2018, a document (in Word or compatible format) containing the following items:

– Title;
– Author(s) and institutional address(s);
– E-mail of one of the authors;
– Abstract (maximum 200 words);
– Keywords (maximum 6);
– Indication if it is a proposal for oral or poster communication;
– Indication if the work competes for the best student presentation prize;
– Abstracts will be subjected to peer review.

Important notes:

The oral communications will have a maximum duration of 15 minutes (plus 5 min discussion) and only electronic supports in Powerpoint or similar will be accepted; A laptop/PC with Windows 10 will be available. Authors should inform the Organizing Committee in due time about the possible need for other equipment or adapters.

Posters may have a maximum size of 120 cm (length/height) x 90 cm (width), with free drawing and layout;
The author(s) of each poster must be present with the poster during the respective session (consult the schedule of sessions in the book “Abstracts-Program” that will be delivered at the reception of the 6thPMP).

Cristina Moisão, graduated in Medicine with specialty in General Surgery, with a master in Medieval History.

 

“Child Palaeopathology: principals and potential”

Dr Mary Lewis (University of Leicester, MSc, PhD [University of Bradford]) is a professor at the University of Reading (UK), specialist in child bioarchaeology. Areas of interest include childhood paleopathology, growth, osteology of the life course and childhood during the Roman and Medieval periods. Her research lines aim to increase knowledge of pediatric /childhood diseases in the archaeological context through differential diagnosis and analysis of socio-economic impact (such as urbanization, work or migration) on pediatrics/child health. Between her numerous works are “Paleopathology of the child: identification of pathological conditions in human skeletal remains of non-adults (2017)” and “The bioarchaeology of children.
