Workshop An Introduction to the Analysis of Faunal Remains in Anthropology

An Introduction to the Analysis of Faunal Remains in Anthropology_pdfThis workshop will introduce students to basic concepts in zooarchaeology with emphasis on how to collect, prepare, identify and analyze animal bone from archaeological sites. Mammal and bird remains will be the focus of this workshop as well as how to distinguish human from animal bone. Methods to quantify animal remains will be reviewed and the students will sort and identify bones from existing archaeological samples to better learn the methodology. Major topics to be discussed include taphonomy of faunal deposits, quantification of skeletal elements, spatial distribution within the archaeological context, bone modification, reconstruction of past environments, and ritual use of animals. Published studies will be reviewed to help students learn standard methods of statistical analysis and interpretation of faunal remains, including those recovered from hunter-gatherer to sedentary populations with domesticated animals
